Dr M N Rajeevan is presently working as the MoES Distinguished Scientist at the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), Trivandrum. He has more than three decades of research experience in weather and climate sciences. During his 38 years of research career, he has served the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the India Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the Department of Space, and the Ministry of Earth Sciences. He superannuated from service on July 31, 2021 after serving as the Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Earth Sciences for five and half years. During his tenure as the Secretary, he made pioneering contributions to improving weather and climate services in India, launching the ambitious Deep Ocean Mission and preparing Blue Economy and Arctic policies. Dr Rajeevan made significant research contributions on Indian monsoon variability, seasonal prediction, climate change and extreme weather events, and prediction of convective weather systems. He has published more than 150 research papers with an h-index of 53 and more than 14,000 citations. He has also edited two books for Springer on Climate Variability and Change over the Indian region and Societal and Economic Impact of Earth Sciences. He is a Fellow of all three Science Academies of India and an academician at the International Academy of Astronautics, Paris. He is currently an Expert Member of the Research Board of the UN/World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Geneva.
